MARQUISE on IRONIC and Her New Artistic Identity

What happens when an artist introduces a new phase of her career around the evolution of her true self?
MARQUISE debuted on June 26 with “dontneedyouanymore”, but she didn’t stop there. Her new single, IRONIC, is out now on all platforms, and she decided to push that evolution even further. The single is built around the bittersweet reversal of a relationship in which the person who once caused the pain becomes the one unable to let go.
MARQUISE presents us with a more mature and self-assured side of herself, while the sharper choreography and stronger performance language underline how quickly her solo identity is taking shape.
After first gaining international attention as one of the 20 contestants selected for HYBE x Geffen Records’ The Debut: Dream Academy, the global project that would eventually form KATSEYE, how did she finally find herself?
We spoke with MARQUISE about the story behind IRONIC, her evolution since stepping into her solo career and the artist she is becoming along the way.

In “IRONIC,” the person who once caused the pain is now the one unable to let go. What did you find most interesting about expressing confidence through this reversal of roles?
"I personally love a two-sided story, and having 'dontneedyouanymore' and 'IRONIC' come out back-to-back really leaned into that for me! The difference in storytelling and concept was great. I think that just the rollout of these two songs boosted the confidence for 'IRONIC,' which was the main goal. It’s a song sung with a smirk knowing where you are now versus the past, and I believe the two singles connect that."
Although “IRONIC” represents a stronger version of you, confidence and vulnerability can often coexist. Was it important for you to preserve both sides within the song?
"Absolutely!! What was also really important for me was to have a continuous storyline sonically, lyrically, and visually! And I do believe that was achieved by bringing emotions from 'dontneedyouanymore' to this song, visually by having feathers, and lyrically by showing a different side to possibly the feeling of ‘moving on’."
The song’s attitude comes through your vocals, expressions, and choreography. Which part of the performance helped you connect most naturally with this new side of yourself?
"As soon as I got the choreography back, I felt so extremely connected to the song seeing it portrayed in movement. It just felt so full and sharp! It connected all the dots for me and leveled up the song with it."
You travelled to Los Angeles to promote “IRONIC” internationally. What did that experience teach you about how you would like to introduce yourself and your identity as a Thai artist to new audiences?
"I believe what’s so special about what I’m doing is pushing Thai production into a global light. I spent the majority of my teenage years in the States, and my music is hugely inspired by Western pop culture and sound! Bringing that factor that I trained in back to Thailand is also so special because it’s a sound not a lot of people have tapped into yet. What a lot of people don’t know is how many talented creatives there are in Thailand, and I consider it an honor to be able to showcase that through my projects as well!"
Since CZMOS is based in Italy, we always like to create a small connection between our guests and our country. Is there an Italian artist, musician, filmmaker, designer, or other creative figure who has influenced or inspired you in some way?
"There’s this artist that goes by Rose Villain that I recently discovered, I believe she’s Italian! There’s this song of hers named ‘bollicine’ that I find so enchanting. Also, I mean, the biggest designer brands in the world stem from Italy, and they play such a huge part in art culture. I used to aspire to be a fashion designer, and I’d say fashion inspires me a lot in the work that I do."
This is only the beginning for MARQUISE
More than simply continuing the story started with her debut, IRONIC feels like a statement of transition: from newcomer to an artist increasingly comfortable defining her own sound, image and perspective.
IRONIC expresses a stronger version of her, and we think this is only the beginning.
And we're looking forward to exploring this musical journey with her and showcasing more of her work to Italian and European audiences.
